Meteorite and jewellery

Jewellery from the Stars

We have been having fun in the forge recently where we have been forging a nickel iron meteorite into jewellery! It fell in Sweden in 1906 but it is actually around 4.2 billion years old and came from a asteroid belt near Jupiter.

This is a small part of around 250kg of the material found from the asteroid and has been certified to be genuine by The International Meteorite Collectors Association (IMCA Inc.)

The metal is very different to mild steel that we normally work with. Due to it’s crystalline structure it can be quite brittle. If we can perfect this process, then we may produce a line of hand forged Iron Age and Viking jewellery out of meteorites. Watch this space!
